10 Techniques for More Precise Writing 10 Techniques for More Precise Writing 10 Techniques for More Precise Writing By Mark Nichol Here are ten ways to produce more vivid, direct, concise prose by replacing wordy phrases with fewer words and reorganizing sentences. It is not advisable to employ these strategies indiscriminately, but prose will usually be improved by following the recommendations below. 1. Use Active Voice When a sentence includes be or any other copulative verb, such as is or are, recast the sentence to omit the verb. Before: ââ¬Å"The meeting was seen by us as a ploy to delay the project.â⬠After: ââ¬Å"We saw the meeting as a ploy to delay the project.â⬠2. Avoid Vague Nouns Phrases formed around general nouns such as aspect, degree, and situation clutter sentences. Before: ââ¬Å"She is an expert in the area of international relations.â⬠After: ââ¬Å"She is an expert in international relations.â⬠3. Use Words, Not Their Definitions Replace explanatory phrases with a single word that encapsulates that explanation. Before: ââ¬Å"The crops also needed to be marketable so that families would be able to sell any yields that exceeded what they personally required.â⬠After: ââ¬Å"The crops also needed to be marketable so that families would be able to sell any surplus.â⬠4. Avoid Noun Strings Reorganize sentences to eliminate series of nouns used as adjectives. Before: ââ¬Å"The lack of a secure transfer may hamper computer security incident response efforts.â⬠After: ââ¬Å"The lack of a secure transfer may hamper responses to computer-security incidents.â⬠5. Convert Nouns to Verbs When a sentence includes a noun ending in -tion, change the noun to a verb to simplify the sentence. Before: ââ¬Å"They will collaborate in the creation of new guidelines.â⬠After: ââ¬Å"They will collaborate to create new guidelines.â⬠6. Reduce Verb Phrases to Simple Verbs Identify the verb buried in a verb phrase and omit the rest of the phrase. Before: ââ¬Å"The results are suggestive of the fact that tampering has occurred.â⬠After: ââ¬Å"The results suggest that tampering has occurred.â⬠7. Replace Complex Words with Simple Ones Choose simpler synonyms for multisyllabic words. Before: ââ¬Å"The department will disseminate the forms soon.â⬠After: ââ¬Å"The department will pass out the forms soon.â⬠8. Avoid Expletives Donââ¬â¢t start sentences with ââ¬Å"There is,â⬠ââ¬Å"There are,â⬠or ââ¬Å"It is.â⬠Before: ââ¬Å"There are many factors in the productââ¬â¢s failure.â⬠After: ââ¬Å"Many factors contributed to the productââ¬â¢s failure.â⬠9. Eliminate Prepositional Phrases Replace ââ¬Å"(noun1) of the (noun2)â⬠phrasing with ââ¬Å"(noun2)ââ¬â¢s (noun1)â⬠phrasing. Before: ââ¬Å"The decision of the committee is final.â⬠After: ââ¬Å"The committeeââ¬â¢s decision is final.â⬠10. Reduce Wordy Phrases to Single Words Replace phrases that signal a transition with simple conjunctions, verbs, or other linking words. Before: Due to the fact that the project is behind schedule, todayââ¬â¢s meeting has been postponed. After: Because the project is behind schedule, todayââ¬â¢s meeting has been postponed. 5 Myths about an Essay Writer Who Does Model Papers for You 5 Myths about an Essay Writer Who Does Model Papers for You Have you ever wondered what an essay writer has in terms of qualifications? Many students are curious about hiring an essay writer but they are hesitant because of the many myths out there relating to the services they provide. There are 5 myths which will be debunked for you about an essay writer who does model papers for you: All Writers Are from India While it is true that there are many writers from India who handle model papers on behalf of students, not all writers come from that area. In fact, many writing services allow students to choose between native speakers and non-native speakers. Native speakers are generally more expensive while non-native speakers are cheaper. Those who fall under the category of non-native writers do not come necessarily from India but might be from Pakistan, Bangladesh, or Kenya. These are all popular places for non-native speakers to work online. Essay Writers Have Bad English It is not fair to state that any writer you select online will have bad English. There are many who do, but you need to carefully choose a custom writing service with good reviews, good feedback, good experience, and writers who have an extensive resume as a part of the company. Writers, who have extensive experience in the academic field, and positive feedback from happy clients, will have good English skills and are typically native speakers. Writers Donââ¬â¢t Make Any Changes This is not necessarily true. It happens with bad services and companies which fail to offer comprehensive and experienced providers. But those companies which are good will make changes if you ask them, and, in fact, many services have substantial revision policies as a part of the original agreement which means that a custom writer is required to provide you with the revisions you want. Writers Give Pre-Written Essays If you select a good writing service as well as a great writer, they will make sure that you get a high quality essay which has been written from scratch. Essay Writers Take Little Money for Their Work If you really want an experienced writer, you will have to pay for the cost of high quality work. If you are paying a cheap price, it is probably for a pre-written essay. So be prepared to get high quality work at a price. That being said, there are many writing services which offer custom essay writers who are qualified, provide unique papers, and speak English as their native language. It is really up to you to search for the best companies available based on reputation and experience before you hand over your payment for a model paper.

Stand up meetings in agile software development - Dissertation Example It involves adapting to changes continuously and delivering of software product (Strode et al., 2009). Agile software process is iterative and incremental with high communication level and customer involvement (Schwaber and Beedle, 2002). In an early paper that defined agile software methodology, it stated that the ââ¬Å"... methodology involves modification and improving requirements through collaboration with cross functional teams to encourage organisation teams in the process of developing the softwareâ⬠Schwaber and Beedle, 2002). The proposition of Takeuchi and Nonaka (1986) concerning Agile Software Development involved encouraging the proximity of team members and verbal communication to create a robust quality framework. The proposition of Takeuchi and Nonaka in promoting Agile software development were based on: 1. Flexibility: A system where different software development processes can be modified to meet the new changes in the software development process. 2. Unity of Purpose: All the parties in the software development process had to be committed to a single vision and mission. And they had to get updates on a regular basis. 3. Coordination: All the different units had to work with each other to attain results at every point in the software development process. These are the main components and elements of Agile Software Development. ... Constant communication and constant interaction is a central feature of Agile Software Development approaches and systems (Fowler, 2012). Schwaber and Beedle (2002) argue that in order to maintain unity of purpose and enhance the holistic nature of the software development process requires the exchange of information and constant interaction between the team members Daily stand-up meetings are a major practice organisations used by agile teams to facilitate the regular exchange of information (Schwaber and Beedle, 2002). Stand-up meetings are daily meetings that are held to provide status updates to team members in Agile Software Development projects (Fowler, 2012). This involves quick updates and a summary of activities that were conducted in the previous day (Fowler, 2012). They are conducted on a daily basis and they last for between 5 and 15 minutes (Fowler, 2012). In agile software development, these stand up meetings are carried out to enable participants in the software develo pment process share views and information on: 1. What was accomplished the previous day. 2. What will be accomplished in the current day. 3. The obstacles faced and how the obstacles will affect the day's work (Fowler, 2012). It is a daily routine that is held at a specific time and same place. Stand-up meetings are therefore an essential part of agile software development and promote constant interaction and the holistic development of software (Stray et.al 2012). Although stand-up meetings are a commonly used practice in Agile Software development, it is not quite clear what their benefits and drawbacks are. Should teams accept the practice without knowing its actual importance and the limits of its effectiveness? This is a question that leads to the next stage of

CIS U2 206 Research Assigment - Coursework Example Lastly, the world entity covers all other users by granting all-account authorizations. Authorizations are dual arithmetic values. The arithmetic value 100 endows file-reading authorizations, 10 endows file-writing authorizations, and 1 endows file-executing authorizations (Perrin). One can combine these values to form a series of authorizations for a particular entity. Listing authorizations requires access to a fileââ¬â¢s authorization settings, where the -1 option for the viewing command offers data that entails listing authorizations. Changing authorizations for every entity requires the ââ¬Å"chmodâ⬠command (Perrin). Overseeing security at the file-level in a UNIX system needs one to maintain file authorizations as stringent and limiting as possible without limiting the system itself. This measure requires a user to refrain from limiting the UNIX system itself from accessing files in an undesired manner. As a result, one should leave file authorizations outside the home paths of the user account at default (Perrin). Learning how to use UNIX file authorizations ultimately enables one to understand UNIX security

ââ¬Å"The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Actâ⬠statesââ¬â¢ that ââ¬Å"child abuse is the leading cause of death in children under the age of eighteen.â⬠Child abuse occurs when adults inflict violence and cruelty upon children. Abuse is any willful act that results in physical, mental, or sexual injury that causes or is likely to cause the child to be physically, mental, or emotionally impaired. Abuse happens to children of any age, sex, race, religion, and social status. à à à à à à à à à à There are many different types of child abuse. There is maltreatment and sexual abuse. Maltreatment is an area that encompasses many different things, such as physical abuse, child neglect, and emotional abuse. Physical abuse may begin with ââ¬Å"shaken ââ¬â baby syndromeâ⬠and escalate to routine spanking, stabbing, punching, hitting, beating, biting, burning, and any other thing that harms a child. The adult doing this may not intend to cause harm, but it is still abuse. Physical abuse may lead to brain damage, disfigurement, blindness, and even death. An average of 5.5 children per 10,000 enrolled in a day care are sexually abused. In the United States more than 125,000 children suffer injuries intentionally inflicted by their caretaker, and between 2,000 and 5,000 of these children die as a result of their injuries. In 1994 3.4 million cases of child abuse were reported. Child neglect is when a caregiver fails to give a child the care, and the supervision they need to stay physically and mentally healthy. Child neglect is when parents or the caregivers fail to provide for the childrenââ¬â¢s basic needs such as clothing, food, shelter, and so on. Child neglect takes many forms such as physical, educational, and emotional neglect. Physical neglect can be seen as a refusal or delay to provide medical attention to a child. If an infant or child is not bathed or kept clean, this is physical neglect. Abandonment, kicking a minor out of the house, lack of parental supervision, leaving the child unattended, or not allowing a runaway to return home may also be seen as physical neglect. Educational neglect includes allowing your child to become truant, not enrolling them in school, or depriving them of special education classes if they need it. Along with their physical needs, children also have emotional needs. Is The American Education system working? Student loan debt is responsible for $1.2 Trillion of the US s national debt. Over the past several years, the youth of this countryââ¬â¢s futures have been based off of social status and test scores. A student from the suburbs of a wealthy community is more likely to go on to a prosperous four year college than a colored male or female from the inner city. These are facts that should not be overlooked; by any means. This subject is not black and white or rich and poor but the battle between the state, and federal government against the youth. The US education system, state and federal are not working properly. For roughly thirty years, international test scores have shown that the United States is falling behind in the education rankings. Many Asian and European countries have much higher test scores. Professionals have argued for years that these rankings are ââ¬Å"Threatening the countryââ¬â¢s economic growthâ⬠(Carnoy). One test in one year compared to all these countries is very inaccurate and should not be taken so literal. Being that the US is so large, each state is in charge of their own education systems. Many different rules and the way exams are graded could be a variable that is being overlooked year after year. Another variable being overlooked is social class(Carnoy). In many countries, only those who come from middle to upper classes may go to school(Carnoy). Along with that, many there are various regulations that are muchShow MoreRelatedWorking Class Students and Higher Education Essay1325 Words à |à 6 Pagesãâ¬â¬Ã£â¬â¬Ã£â¬â¬Ã£â¬â¬Working Class Student s and Higher Education ãâ¬â¬Ã£â¬â¬Ã£â¬â¬Authors Michelle Tokarczyk, Peter Sacks, Robert Haverman and Timothy Smeeding all write about certain problems that working class students are facing in education in the U.S. , especially in college education which is usually defined as higher education.
